July 1: Memorial Day of Saint Junípero Serra
On July 1, the Church in California and many regions of the United States honors Saint Junípero Serra, an inspiring figure of the 18th century known as the "Apostle of California."
Junípero Serra, born in 1713 in Mallorca, Spain, joined the Franciscans at a young age and soon developed into a committed theologian. In 1749, he left Europe to serve as a missionary in Mexico and later on the Pacific coast of North America. He founded numerous mission stations, including San Diego and Monterey, and established a total of 21 Franciscan missions in California, which today support cities like San Francisco . Despite severe health restrictions, he walked long distances and showed compassion for the indigenous peoples, whom he also sought to protect.
In sacred art, Junípero Serra is frequently depicted in Franciscan habit, often holding a cross or a model of a missionary church, symbols of his missionary work and spiritual building . He exemplifies a Church that goes forth to bring vitality, salvation, and dignity to the world.
