15 August: Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary

The Assumption of Mary, also known as the Assumption into Heaven, is one of the most important Marian feasts in the church year. The tradition dates back to the 5th century and was confirmed as dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950.

This day celebrates the belief that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven—a foretaste of the future of all people in communion with God . In many regions, especially in Italy as Ferragosto, August 15th is not only a religious holiday but also a social one.

In South Tyrol, the Assumption of Mary is accompanied by numerous customs: pilgrimages, herb blessings and processions, expressions of lively popular piety.
