On behalf of Emperor Otto I, he traveled to Kyiv as a missionary—a visionary step toward rapprochement between East and West. In 955, he was appointed Bishop of Magdeburg and later the first archbishop of this newly created metropolis . Adalbert was an educated theologian, a clever organizer, and a persuasive preacher.
