June 22 – Saint Thomas More: Conscience before Power

On June 22, the Church commemorates Saint Thomas More , an English statesman, scholar, and martyr. Born in London in 1478, he was a lawyer, humanist, and close confidant of King Henry VIII. As Lord Chancellor, however, he opposed the separation of England from the Roman Catholic Church—a move that would cost him his life. More was executed for treason in 1535 for refusing to recognize the Law of Supremacy (by which the king declared himself head of the Church). He died with the words: "I die a faithful servant of the king—but first of God."

He is considered the patron saint of politicians, lawyers and freedom of conscience and was named patron saint of rulers by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
