May 27 – St. Augustine of Canterbury: Apostle of the English

On May 27, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Augustine of Canterbury , the so-called "Apostle of the English." In 597, Augustine was sent to England by Pope Gregory the Great to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. He was a monk, missionary, and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury—one of the most important bishoprics of the Middle Ages. Despite cultural barriers, pagan customs, and political obstacles, he succeeded in spreading Christianity sustainably on the island. St. Augustine is venerated as a wise, humble, and persistent messenger of faith and is considered the patron saint of the English Church.
