June 5 – St. Boniface: Apostle of the Germans
June 5th is dedicated to St. Boniface , the "Apostle of the Germans." Born around 673 in England as Wynfreth, he entered a monastery at an early age and became a highly educated Benedictine monk. In 719, he was sent by the Pope to Germania to promote the Christianization of the pagan peoples.
Boniface became famous, among other things, for his courageous felling of the Danube Oak near Geismar—a symbolic break with the Germanic cult of the gods. He founded numerous monasteries (including Fulda) and reformed the church in Franconia, Bavaria, and Thuringia. In 754, he was killed by pagan Frisians near Dokkum (present-day Netherlands).
He is considered the patron saint of Germany, missionaries, bishops and brewers.
