June 6 – St. Norbert of Xanten: Preacher of Repentance
On June 6, the church honors St. Norbert of Xanten , one of the most important reformers of the 12th century. Originally a courtly cleric at the court of Emperor Henry V, Norbert underwent profound transformation after a riding accident – he left all his offices behind and lived from then on as a preacher of penance.
Norbert founded the Premonstratensian Order in 1120 with the goal of renewing the life of secular priests. In 1126, he became Archbishop of Magdeburg and advocated for church reform and social justice. His clarity, severity, and humility made him a leading figure of medieval piety.
He is the patron saint against lightning strikes and for a good harvest.
